Solar investment tax credit

The solar investment tax credit is the federal tax-credit mechanism that can reduce eligible solar project costs.

Definition

For homeowners and project owners, the practical effect is a percentage credit against tax liability for eligible solar property. The current rules, deadlines, eligibility limits, and forms should always be checked against IRS guidance before a purchase decision.

In solar economics, the credit reduces net system cost. That lower cost flows directly into savings, financing, and payback calculations, but it is not a rebate and it does not help taxpayers who cannot use the credit.
