Defined term

Community solar

Community solar is an off-site solar project whose output or bill credits are shared by multiple subscribers.

Definition

Community solar can fit renters, condo owners, shaded homes, and households that do not want rooftop equipment. A subscriber generally receives utility-bill credits tied to a share of production from a shared array.

The economics depend on the contract discount, utility crediting rules, transfer rights, cancellation terms, and whether renewable energy certificates are retained or sold separately.
